"Mauritius...This name often evokes fine sandy beaches, turquoise lagoons, images of a postcard paradise.

For two weeks, I crisscrossed the island, from the narrow streets of Port Louis to the winding roads of Chamarel, where the mountains seem to defy the low clouds of the Indian Ocean.

Welcoming my Mauritian friend Hugo, my gaze turned to another reality. Behind the backdrop of the often-circulated cliché lies the daily life of those who inhabit this dense country, marked by its history, its mixtures, and its contrasts.

I am neither a journalist nor a historian. Just a passerby who stops, observes, and attempts to write with light. This is not a report. It is a visual poem, a first journey to the Indian Ocean." — Julien Jarrige
